Throughout the development of www.seekatweet.com I kept thinking up new and interesting ways in which the app was going to prove really useful.
Having now used the app personally for a while during testing, I thought I’d share some of the ways I’ve used it to find followers – and potential business!
When you first visit www.seekatweet.com, you’ll be greeted with a simple page containing a Google map. This is your starting point for all your interaction with the site.
Before you can go any further, you’ll need to zoom into the area you’re interested in and click on the map to place a marker.
Once you’ve clicked on the map, a red marker will appear with a circle radius around it. This shows the area in which tweets will be looked for. Anyone who’s tweeted within this search radius will now appear as a blue twitter bird on the map.
Below the map, you’ll now have a control panel. You can use this to vary the search radius and also to filter the tweets on specific keywords.
Below the control panel are the results of the search. The profile picture of each person who has tweeted within the search radius will appear in this area.
By hovering over a picture, you can see where on the map they’re from. Click on the user to see more details from that users’ profile.
Now you have the basics, you can start clicking around the map and filtering on different keywords.
The first thing I found when playing around with www.seekatweet.com was just how many twitter users there are around the world! Clicking on random places around the globe where I least expected to find people, usually found a few tweeters!
It’s also interesting to find out who’s tweeting around you! A friend who was recently introduced to the tool found old school friends who he didn’t realise were on Twitter!
If you’re going to be travelling somewhere and have some questions to ask in advance, why not use the tool to find someone local to ask?
You might be wondering how on earth this could be used for businesses, however I’ve already found potential customers using the tool!
Take the example of a plumber.. Click on the map where you’re located, change the search area to show the region you’re willing to travel, and then filter on the word “plumber”. Chances are, you’ll soon find people looking for plumbing services in you’re area. You can then contact them direct to see if you can help.
This pro-active approach might just give you the edge on your competition and result in regular sources of customers?!
