Here’s an experiment in how well the search engines can OCR (Optical Character Recognition) an image.
Below is a selection of images in different formats, with different styles. Once this blog post has been indexed, I’ll be looking to see which images have been OCR’d (if any) to examine the current state of text recognition within images indexed by the major search engines.
I’ll post a follow-up article once I’ve collated the results.
So here’s the images – over to you search engines!

In the ongoing effort to increase the speed of www.scotiasystems.com (See our SEOMoz article), I’ve come across “webpagetest” – a free tool which is excellent for reporting on the speed of downloading each resource on a page. The reporting is excellent, and you can also choose where in the world you would like to run the test from. Excellent if you’re targeting a specific location.
Give it a try here: www.webpagetest.org
