July 24th, 2009 adminI’ve seen this one a few times before. You boot the PC and see a blue screen of death with the error : stop: c0000218 – Cannot load the software hive.
Due to a registry file failure, previously this has usually meant a reinstall of the OS, however today I found the following KB article which fixed the problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=307545
Not the quickest or easiest of fixes, however the PC is now back to normal!

July 23rd, 2009 adminEver had all your desktop icons, and settings suddenly disappear whe logging into Vista. You’ll find if you reboot – the same thing happens when you try and log on.
You may think that you’ve lost all the settings – but just try logging out and then back in again (without rebooting) and hopefully you’ll find everything is back to normal!

July 22nd, 2009 adminIf you’re getting error code 80072EFD when attempting a Windows update – try this from a DOS window (running as Administrator) :
netsh winhttp show proxy
The result shouyld be “Direct access (no proxy server)”
If it isn’t – run this :
netsh winhttp reset proxy
The proxy can be set by a malware infection to stop you getting windows updates. This corrects the problem.
